En 1842, la Dolly fait escale en rade de l'île de Nuku-Hiva, après plusieurs mois de chasse à la baleine. À son bord, Herman Melville, accablé par cette pénible vie, projette de déserter. La baie de Taiohae était alors investie par la flotte de l'amiral Dupetit-Thouars qui annexait par ce coup de force les îles Marquises au territoire français. La nuit venue, Melville accompagné d'un camarade, Toby, rejoint la rive à la nage. Deux tribus vivent sur l'île, l'une douce et pacifique, l'autre cannibale. Le hasard va les conduire chez cette dernière. Taïpi et Omou retracent le récit des pérégrinations d'Herman Melville en Polynésie. C'est à la fois une relation d'aventures et une ouvre d'anthropologue - ouvrages documentaires et surtout véridiques alors particulièrement appréciés du public. Certains passages furent taxés d'invraisemblance (il est vrai que l'auteur prit quelque liberté avec les faits), puis d'indécence, enfin une campagne de presse dénonça l'acerbe critique faite des missions américaines dans le Pacifique. Lassé de ces polémiques et soucieux de mettre à l'épreuve sa capacité d'invention, Melville décide, en cours de rédaction de la suite de son voyage dans le Pacifique, intitulé Mardi, d'échapper au récit autobiographique pour s'aventurer dans le roman, un « dessein hardi » où il puisse laisser libre cours à son imagination, à son goût pour l'allégorie et à la satire. De livre en livre les personnages du futur Moby-Dick prennent forme, les obsessions se précisent, les objets de la quête se matérialisent.
