Mettant en scène écrivains, actrices, libraires et imprimeurs, il propose une analyse cinglante du milieu de la presse - " ce cancer qui dévorera peut-être le pays " (Préface de 1839) - et d'un monde où seuls les plus cyniques tirent leur épingle du jeu. Dans ce récit d'apprentissage, Balzac trace de manière exemplaire le parcours négatif qui avait été, depuis Chateaubriand, et sera encore, jusqu'à Flaubert et Zola au moins, celui d'un certain siècle : l'initiation, par la souffrance et l'échec, à la dure loi du réel. Pour Lucien de Rubempré, échappé de son Angoumois natal, la leçon passe par Paris. Et Paris, révélateur impitoyable, dissipera les mirages provinciaux, offrant à Lucien, en guise de gloire rêvée, le sentiment de son néant et de sa solitude : cela s'appelle devenir adulte.
