Dans ce pays froid où les étrangers sont supposés accepter avec gratitude la place qu’on leur offre dans la société, leur intégration se passe mal et le quotidien d’Emine se dégrade. De nos jours, Bekim est étudiant à Helsinki. Il fait beaucoup d’efforts pour s’intégrer à la société finlandaise dans laquelle il a grandi, tout en essayant d’assumer son homosexualité. Un jour, il rencontre un chat dans un bar gay, qui va très vite dominer ses nuits et son esprit, avant de se révéler être une nouvelle déception amoureuse. Bekim décide alors de partir en voyage jusqu’à ses racines, au Kosovo, où le cruel destin de sa famille a commencé. Mon chat Yugoslavia est un roman saisissant, loufoque et inoubliable, écrit par un petit génie de la littérature finlandaise âgé de vingt-quatre ans, qui nous emporte des contrées kosovares aux rues d’Helsinki avec une voix à nulle autre pareille.
