Élève brillante, Nicole était douce et sociable (cheftaine scout, membre de plusieurs associations d’étudiantes). Elle meurt subitement dans un accident terrible. À l’automne suivant, tandis qu’un nouveau semestre commence, Craig, l’ancien petit ami de Nicole est renvoyé de l’université médiocre où il était entré par relations. Tenu pour responsable de la mort de Nicole mais relâché faute de preuves, il ne parvient pas à surmonter le drame, ne cesse d’y repenser et a l’impression de voir Nicole partout. Perry, son colocataire, était dans le même lycée que Nicole. Lors d’un séminaire sur la mort par Mira Polson, professeur d’anthropologie, il fait part de ses interrogations et de ses doutes quant à la disparition de la jeune fille. Il dit avoir connu la vraie Nicole : une personne manipulatrice, malhonnête, et séductrice. De son côté, Shelly Lockes, unique témoin de l’accident, conteste la version officielle, selon laquelle Nicole, baignant dans une mare de sang, n’aurait pu être identifiée que grâce à ses bijoux. Selon elle, la jeune fille était inconsciente mais ne présentait aucune lésion. D’étranges événements surviennent alors: mystérieux appels téléphoniques, cartes postales énigmatiques, apparitions de Nicole... ou d’une fille qui lui ressemble. La rumeur enfle à Godwin Hall, précipitant Craig, Perry, Mira et Shelly au coeur d’un ténébreux mystère qui va transformer leurs vies pour toujours: se pourrait-il que, trop jeune pour mourir, Nicole soit revenue ?
