Enfin il y a le président, quatorze années durant. Václav Havel est l’un des hommes politiques les plus fascinants du dernier siècle. Il a joué un rôle décisif dans l’enterrement d’une des utopies les plus séduisantes, et les plus meurtrières, de tous les temps, et a mis en œuvre l’une des métamorphoses majeures de l’époque récente. Michael Žantovský, ancien porte-parole de Havel et ami de dissidence depuis la fin des années 1970, fut un témoin privilégié de toutes ces années. L’ouvrage qu’il nous livre ici est tout autant le portrait d’un homme qu’un document historique majeur pour la compréhension d’une époque pas si lointaine qu’il y paraît. Homme de lettres, spécialiste de psychologie sociale, Michael Žantovský (né en 1949) est ambassadeur de la République tchèque au Royaume-Uni. Il a contribué, dès les années 1970, à la presse d’opposition au régime communiste de Tchécoslovaquie. Au côté de Václav Havel, il a pris des responsabilités politiques puis diplomatiques. De 1992 à 1997, il a été l’ambassadeur de la République tchèque aux États-Unis, puis de 2003 à 2009 en Israël. Il a également traduit de nombreux auteurs anglais et américains vers le tchèque (Norman Mailer, Nadine Gordimer ou Toni Morrison).
