L’ouverture d’esprit de Joseph Conrad est toujours débattue : son traitement de l’Asie dans sa fiction est encore vu parfois comme colonial(iste). Pourtant, en tant que Polonais, il savait ce qu’être en butte à l’impérialisme (russe) voulait dire. Et en tant que locuteur trilingue, il pratiquait les cultures étrangères au lieu de se contenter de les compiler. Et s’il avait repensé l’Asie sous cet angle singulier : non en surplomb, mais en immersion ? Il a rencontré assez d’autochtones dans l’Archipel malais pour s’imprégner de leur vision des choses. Il fréquenta même assez la diaspora de Singapour pour assimiler des notions de philosophie chinoise, sans compter ce qu’il pouvait trouver à ce sujet dans les livres qui se multipliaient de son temps. Joseph Conrad : l’Asie repensée soutient ainsi que, loin d’être un Occidental obtus de plus, Conrad s’est rapproché de l’Autre asiatique. Il était sans doute une exception à l’époque. N’en déduisons pas qu’il se pliait à la règle générale.
