Il le doit aussi à son histoire, riche de personnages remarquables. Henri Carcenac est l'un d'entre eux. Né à l'orée de la Révolution, mort au début du Second Empire, il marque de son empreinte la vie locale de la première moitié du XIXe siècle. C'est un entrepreneur moderniste et social, créateur de nombreux emplois dans ses usines du Monastère et de Salles-la-Source. Un défenseur de projets d'avant-garde, comme ce pont suspendu imaginé pour raccourcir la route de Rodez à Millau et amener les eaux potables au chef-lieu. C'est aussi, à deux reprises, le maire de Rodez. De 1830 à 1835, sous la Monarchie de Juillet, puis en 1848-1849, lors de l'instauration de la IIe République. Sous son impulsion, la ville s'ouvre à l'innovation. Mais aucun de ses mandats n'ira à son terme, car cet édile respecté irrite le pouvoir central. Trop à cheval sur les principes, trop en avance sur son temps, et surtout trop républicain...
