Description

Frank Parish, inspecteur au NYPD, a des difficultés relationnelles. Avec sa femme, avec sa fille, avec sa hiérarchie. C’est un homme perdu, qui n’a jamais vraiment résolu ses problèmes avec son père, mort assassiné en 1992 après avoir été une figure légendaire des Anges de New York, ces flics d’élite qui, dans les années quatre-vingt, ont nettoyé Manhattan de la pègre et des gangs. Alors qu’il vient de perdre son partenaire et qu’il est l’objet d’une enquête des affaires internes, Frank s’obstine, au prix de sa carrière et de son équilibre mental, à creuser une affaire apparemment banale, la mort d’une adolescente. Persuadé que celle-ci a été la victime d’un tueur en série qui sévit dans l’ombre depuis longtemps, il essaie obstinément de trouver un lien entre plusieurs meurtres irrésolus. Mais, ayant perdu la confiance de tous, son entêtement ne fait qu’ajouter à un passif déjà lourd. Contraint de consulter une psychothérapeute, Frank va lui livrer l’histoire de son père et des Anges de New York, une histoire bien différente de la légende communément admise. Mais il y a des secrets qui, pour le bien de tous, gagneraient à rester enterrés. Après avoir évoqué la mafia dans Vendetta, la CIA dans Les Anonymes, R. J. Ellory s’attaque à une nouvelle figure de la mythologie américaine, la police de New York. Avec ce récit d’une rare profondeur, qui n’est pas sans évoquer des films comme Serpico, La nuit nous appartient, ou encore Copland, Ellory nous offre à la fois un grand thriller au suspense omniprésent et le portrait déchirant d’un homme en quête de justice et de rédemption.
