Plus tard, ils ont fait accéder le rock à l'âge adulte et ont amené tout le Swinging London à l'opéra après un ultime hommage aux radio pirates. À l'âge où la plupart des groupes se séparent ou se répètent, eux ont encore su donner des albums originaux, intelligents et surtout lucides sur leur milieu, sur la condition de pop star, mais aussi et au-delà, sur la société, sur le monde, sur la vie. Lucides et honnêtes sont les maîtres mots pour les Who, toujours en exercice ; ils ont mis un point d'honneur à respecter leur public et à donner le meilleur d'euxmêmes, sur disque et sur scène. Ils représentent l'honneur du rock et Townshend, leur leader, est l'un des plus grands artistes (tous terrains) de sa génération, sans conteste. Avec Ray Davies, et ce nom n'est pas fortuit tant il a toujours confessé une admiration sans borne pour le prince poète des Kinks, il reste l'incarnation et la mémoire de ces années-lumière où l'imagination et la créativité faisaient reculer les limites du champ des possibles. C'était il y a environ un demi-siècle et l'on pourrait croire, au vu de l'époque, que ces temps appartiennent à un passé révolu, obscur et enfoui. Sauf qu'il en reste des vestiges et des traces. Sauf qu'il reste, toujours en exercice, les Who !
