Aux États-Unis, le MC5 aura été ce combo au centre de toutes les influences, un peu ce qu'auront été les Yardbirds pour le rock anglais. Leurs suiveurs auront été plus chanceux qu'eux parce que plus opiniâtres et, surtout, plus disciplinés. Sans ses ancrages politiques, cette appétence pour le chaos et un manque chronique de fiabilité (ou, pour le dire autrement, de professionnalisme) le MC5 aurait pu être une sorte de Rolling Stones américains. Ces musiciens en avaient le talent, la puissance et le charisme. Au lieu de ça, ils auront eu une trajectoire erratique les rapprochant plutôt de groupes mythiques et maudits (ça va souvent ensemble) comme les Flamin' Groovies. De grands oubliés à qui les rétrospectives et les commémorations ne rendent pas hommage. Comme d'autres groupes malchanceux (Love, Steppenwolf ou Buffalo Springfield) qui ont écrit les plus belles pages de l'histoire du rock américain. Du rock tout court. Les cinq de Motor City auront été aussi importants d'un point de vue musical que politique, puisant dans le rock'n'roll, la Soul et le blues de quoi charrier inlassablement la poésie électrique des rues, la rage de vivre et la force de lutter.
