Plus d'une centaines d'espèces y sont présentées, introduites volontairement ou accidentellement : des espèces ayant déjà un impact important sur le milieu, mais aussi des espèces qui passent encore inaperçues tant qu'elles ne posent pas de problèmes. Deux exemples en France de plantes invasives : la renouée du Japon, originaire d'Asie, qui envahit les berges des rivières et fait reculer les espèces végétales et animales dans les sites envahis. l'ambroisie à feuilles d'armoises, originaire d'Amérique du Nord, est une plante annuelle introduite accidentellement et qui pose des problèmes d'allergies et de désherbage dans les champs de tournesols.
