Au printemps 1939, l'esprit encore habité par son séjour de dix-huit mois en Europe, Gabrielle Roy, qui vient juste d'avoir trente ans, loge dans une chambre du centre de Montréal - " la plus misérable petite chambre qui se puisse trouver en dehors des prisons ", se souviendra-t-elle une quarantaine d'années plus tard. Elle a choisi de ne pas retourner au Manitoba, où l'attend pourtant un poste d'institutrice, et de rester dans la métropole pour y gagner sa vie en écrivant. Puis voilà qu'un beau jour du printemps 1940 " une grâce toute spéciale de la Providence " la conduit au bureau de René Soulard, le rédacteur en chef du Bulletin des agriculteurs, magazine montréalais auquel le nom et la plume de Gabrielle Roy vont dès lors demeurer associés pendant plus de cinq ans. Plus qu'un simple gagne-pain, la collaboration au Bulletin peut être envisagée comme le point de départ du parcours littéraire de Gabrielle Roy, c'est-à-dire à la fois comme un apprentissage décisif et comme une " première consécration [...] qui l'oriente définitivement vers l'écriture ". Elle va s'y consacrer avec beaucoup d'application et mettre au point, durant ces cinq années, une vision du monde, une sensibilité et un ensemble de valeurs qui seront par la suite indissociables de son œuvre : la compassion, l'intérêt pour les minorités culturelles et les colonies, mais aussi la fascination pour le nomadisme et les personnages solitaires ainsi que le goût des paysages et de la géographie. Ce livre reprend vingt-huit de ces reportages, qui portent sur Montréal, la Gaspésie et la Côte-Nord, l'Abitibi, l'Ouest canadien et diverses régions du Québec. Les textes sont agrémentés de nombreuses photos - souvent prises par Gabrielle Roy elle-même - qui accompagnaient originalement les reportages.
