Ren Bonian est le pseudonyme de Ren Yi (1840-1896). Dans sa jeunesse il fut porte-drapeau dans l’armée des Taiping puis se rendit à Shanghai et apprit à peindre auprès de Ren Xun. Il excellait dans le portrait, la peinture de personnages, de fleurs et d’oiseaux. Il fut l’artiste de l’Ecole de Shanghai qui vendit le plus de peintures ; il laissa derrière lui des milliers d’œuvres. Contemporain exact des impressionnistes il est « sans conteste un grand artiste universel, un coloriste éblouissant » (François Cheng, La Voie des fleurs et des oiseaux sous les Song).
