A vingt-six ans, le Morgien Marc Warnery (1797-1836) débarque au Surinam, une colonie des Pays. Bas qui produit sucre et café. Il espère y faire fortune et pouvoir éponger ainsi les dettes qu'il a laissées en Suisse. Petit à petit, il grimpe dans l'échelle sociale : de blanc-officier - sorte de contremaître chargé de diriger les cultures et leur transformation - il devient directeur de plantation et aspire au titre d'administrateur. Cette société esclavagiste tropicale, il la décrit en détail dans ses lettres à ses parents : travail et vie sociale des esclaves, menace permanente que constituent les fugitifs regroupés dans des zones inaccessibles, quotidien des colons blancs dans une société très hiérarchisée au sein de laquelle il s'efforce de trouver sa place, sans oublier la nature exubérante et hostile, les animaux et les insectes qui grouillent dans un paysage envahi par les eaux. Alors qu'il commence à entrevoir la possibilité d'un voyage en Suisse, il est fauché par les fièvres à trente-neuf ans. Ce rare témoignage en français sur le Surinam - totalement inédit - frappe par la vivacité du récit autant que par la destinée tragique de son auteur et l'éclairage des dures conditions de vie des esclaves. -- 4ème de couverture.
