Pourquoi un guide des gisements d'information et des centres de recherche spécialisés sur l'Océanie ? On note tout d'abord le contraste saisissant caractéristique de la réalité océanienne : une grande homogénéité culturelle s'oppose à l'extrême dispersion des sociétés qui s'établirent en plusieurs milliers d'îles essaimées sur un continent aquatique (180 millions de km ?) couvrant un demi-tour du monde. Et le constat de la difficulté d'accès, en France, aux documents concernant le Pacifique insulaire. Certes, au cours de l'histoire inclassable de ce continent dispersé, les lieux de dépôt du savoir océanien se sont multipliés, dans les métropoles qui exercent leur influence scientifique sur leurs territoires, dans les micro-Etats insulaires, et dans les Etats indépendants du Pacifique, notamment l'Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande. Des archives métropolitaines ou locales se sont constituées, des institutions de recherche anciennes ou récentes ont déposé des travaux marqués par des traditions culturelles diverses, des collections d'objets profanes ou sacrés ont été réunies ou éparpillées dans une constellation de sites patrimoniaux (archives, bibliothèques, musées...). Cet ouvrage, même non exhaustif, a donc l'ambition de permettre à toutes les personnes s'intéressant aux peuples du Pacifique insulaire de mieux comprendre cette aire culturelle tout en facilitant la mise en relation des différents acteurs.
