Lao Tseu n'a pas, comme Confucius, fondé une école. Il n'en éprouvait ni le désir, ni le besoin. Pour lui, importait de diffuser un enseignement. Il a jeté un regard sur " le grand ensemble du monde " et a rendu avec des mots ce qu'il a vu, laissant aux générations suivantes les indications nécessaires pour contempler de manière indépendante les vérités qu'il avait découvertes. A travers les phénomènes passagers de la vie humaine, il a réussi à élever son regard jusqu'au " sens éternel du processus cosmique ", dont la grandeur défie toute conception. Il y a trouvé la paix et l'aisance qui lui permettait de ne plus prendre au sérieux le prétendu sérieux de la vie, car aucune valeur essentielle en soi et pour soi n'y réside. C'est ce qu'il a voulu nous transmettre dans le Tao Te King.
