Joe Dante est sans nul doute le plus anticonventionnel et le plus irrévérencieux des cinéastes américains contemporains. Auteur d'une douzaine de longs métrages pour le cinéma et la télévision, il est surtout connu en France grâce au succès phénoménal des deux Gremlins. On se souvient aussi de son épisode atypique dans le film à sketches La Quatrième Dimension, de la féroce politique-fiction La Seconde Guerre de Sécession et, plus récemment, de l'antimilitariste Small Soldiers. Les entretiens avec Joe Dante permettent de reconstituer son itinéraire, depuis ses débuts de cinéphile potache, organisant des projections iconoclastes d'extraits de films anciens, remontés sous le titre The Movie Orgy, son apprentissage avec Roger Corman, et ses rapports avec Steven Spielberg qui a produit plusieurs de ses films. Quatre textes apportent les éclairages complémentaires pour appréhender le contexte où il travaille. En effet, à travers celui de Joe Dante, c'est le portrait de la " promotion Corman des années 70 " qui se dessine, nourrie de culture, populaire des années 50, cinéma de genre, bandes dessinées, dessins animés. Roger Corman, cinéaste devenu producteur a su donner leur chance, au sein de son studio New World, à de nombreux cinéastes comme Francis Ford Coppola, Monte Hellman, Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, John Sayles et autant de techniciens, scénaristes, compositeurs qui y ont fait leurs classes, au plus fort de la contre-culture subversive des années 70. Joe Dante et son associé, le producteur Michael Finnell, ont ouvert leurs archives aux auteurs pour reconstituer une chronologie et une filmographie du cinéaste, et établir un dictionnaire de la " génération Corman ", portrait de groupe d'une bande de " gremlins " à la conquête de Hollywood. Ce livre collectif a été édité sous la direction de Bill Krohn en collaboration avec Roger Garcia et Jonathan Rosenbaum ; textes de Charles Tesson, Dave Kehr, Joseph McBride ; filmographie par Howard Prouty.
