Depuis sa naissance, le cinéma convoque les effets spéciaux, que ce soit pour créer " l'ordinaire de l'extraordinaire " ou " l'extraordinaire de l'ordinaire ". L'explosion du numérique, depuis les années quatre-vingt-dix, a considérablement amplifié le phénomène et repose la question de ses usages : quelle est donc la nature de cet " effet " produit sur le spectateur ? Quand il voit un monstre, un tremblement de terre, le spectateur, au fond de lui-même, sait bien que c'est faux, mais quand même... le temps d'un film, il y croit. L'effet spécial est bien sur produit à partir d'une technique particulière que l'on peut démonter, expliquer, montrer, mais avant tout, il produit lui-même un sens, celui que recherche le metteur en scène qui a choisi de l'intégrer dans son film. C'est cette double réflexion que mène l'auteur dans cet ouvrage : comment faire des effets spéciaux et surtout pourquoi faire des effets spéciaux ? A partir d'exemples de films et metteurs en scènes qui couvrent toute l'histoire du cinéma de King Kong à Matrix ou au Titanic, de Georges Méliès à George Lucas, James Cameron ou Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Dans les " plans à effets spéciaux " se condensent les problèmes économiques, esthétiques, techniques et idéologiques, ce qui en fait un point de départ essentiel à la compréhension du cinéma d'aujourd'hui - comme d'hier.
