Robert Crumb devint à la fin des années 60 le pape de la bande dessinée underground américaine. Né en 1943 dans une famille typique de la petite classe moyenne de l’après-guerre, il s’imposa à l’âge adulte comme le premier satiriste de la contreculture, avec des personnages mémorables tels que Fritz le chat, jouisseur cynique et désabusé, et le gourou roublard Mr. Natural. Au détour de rencontres avec Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Charles Bukowski et bien d’autres, il marqua les années 70 en pornographe vilipendé par les féministes et les gardiens des bonnes mœurs. Mais il se révéla dans la suite de sa carrière comme un créateur aux facettes multiples, illustrateur et musicien aussi bien inspiré par sa nostalgie des années 20 et 30 que par la vie de Kafka et la Genèse. De Philadelphie à Cleveland, de la Californie aux Cévennes, ce livre retrace la vie et l’œuvre de R. Crumb, baby-boomer qui quitta à dix-neuf ans la famille dysfonctionnelle dans laquelle il avait grandi pour devenir d’abord l’auteur de bandes dessinées le plus emblématique de la révolution hippie puis, à la fin du XXe siècle, un des principaux pères spirituels des romans graphiques de la nouvelle BD américaine. Cet ouvrage est la première biographie de R. Crumb. Dessinateur autodidacte au talent exceptionnel, il fait depuis toujours scandale en raison de ses incursions dans la pornographie mais aussi dans une satire sans concessions où il met en scène ses propres angoisses envers les femmes mais aussi toutes les pulsions honteuses de la société américaine, son racisme et son conservatisme.
