Depuis plusieurs années maintenant, la notion de réseau connaît la faveur du grand public et des médias : on veut voir des réseaux partout, on veut mettre des réseaux partout. Au-delà de la mode, des utopies, des rêves, il y a à cela plusieurs raisons valables. De l'atome aux galaxies, en passant par le territoire, l'entreprise ou la culture, la réticulation s'est emparée des lieux et des êtres, tissant sans cesse de nouvelles extensions (Internet, téléphonie cellulaire...). Hier encore, les mots et les choses se distribuaient dans des tableaux, des arbres. Le damier des champs reflétait le catalogue des substances. Un ordre immuable semblait partout régner, dans la nature comme dans la société, au sol ou dans les nomenclatures. On voyageait peu. Le roi, sa cour restaient à Versailles, le peuple en ses provinces, le philosophe dans son poêle. Le développement industriel et celui des communications ont changé la face de la Terre. À la maille agricole, à l'organisation centralisée des villes et des villages s'est progressivement substitué un ensemble organique de liaisons denses, à la fois matérielles (routières, ferrées, fluviales...) et immatérielles (lumineuses, hertziennes...) qui nous rendent proche l'" amour du lointain ". À l'homme enfin devenu ce qu'il est, c'est-à-dire un " réseau pensant ", il restait à " penser les réseaux ". Ce livre - et les travaux des chercheurs d'horizons différents qui le constituent entendent servir un tel projet.
