Si la présence de l'eau est vérifiable dans d'innombrables épisodes de récits arthuriens, elle se fait plus rare dans les gestes épiques ou dans les intrigues romanesques qui échappent au cycle d'Arthur. Surtout, elle n'y possède que rarement la signification secrète qui constitue pour les mers, fleuves, rivières et sources celtiques l'essence de leur mystère. L'eau épique ou romanesque est généralement plus "naturelle", si l'on peut dire, elle est moins perfide, moins équivoque que l'eau celtique. Elle recèle pourtant des périls qui peuvent être mortels pour le héros. L'eau dangereuse coule alors dans le paysage épique : elle apparaît fréquemment comme la composante d'une situation dramatique, ou sa cause. Elle sert de décor à des scènes violemment pathétiques, dont nous fournirons un certain nombre d'exemples ; elle peut prendre dans l'épopée et surtout le roman un sens symbolique, adopter une personnalité morale, être un piège pour l'homme.
