Les textes rassemblés dans ce volume de Lexique montrent combien d'énigmes entourent encore le nom propre, pourtant sorti de la marge où l'avait maintenu la tradition depuis les travaux de Georges Kleiber, Michèle Noailly, Kerstin Jonasson et Marie-Noëlle Gary-Prieur. La question – toujours en débat – de la nature du nom propre est abordée de différents biais : par la traduction commentée du texte d’un grammairien arabe, lecteur avisé de Platon et précurseur de certaines théories modernes (Seyfeddine Ben Mansour) ; par une réflexion, grâce à l’étude de même, sur le rôle du nom propre dans l’affirmation de l’identité (Michèle Noailly) ; par une interrogation sur les " noms de temps ", qui semblent posséder des propriétés caractéristiques du nom propre (Danièle Van de Velde) ; enfin, par une discussion, appuyée sur une prise de position cognitiviste, de la thèse selon laquelle l’essence du nom propre est constitutive de son sens (Walter De Mulder). En traitant des frontières entre noms communs et noms propres, les autres contributions abordent, en termes plus grammaticaux, la question apparentée de l’opposition entre général et particulier. Deux d’entre elles mettent l’accent sur ce qui les différencie du point de vue du fonctionnement du pluriel (Marie-Noëlle Gary-Prieur) et des conditions d’emploi de autre (Catherine Schnedecker). Les deux autres présentent une série de faits relatifs à la présence du partitif (Nelly Flaux) et aux emplois figurés (Nelly Flaux) ; ces faits, tout en montrant la perméabilité des frontières, donnent une assise supplémentaire à la distinction catégorielle entre les deux classes de mots habituellement rassemblées sous le même chef dans les grammaires anciennes et contemporaines.
