Diese Publikation rekonstruiert den Beginn und die Entwicklung der Einbindung der Frauen in die öffentliche Lehrtätigkeit im 19. Jahrhundert. Die heute als selbstverständlich geltende lehrende Frau blickt auf eine Professionsentwicklung zurück, die einerseits seit ihren institutionellen Anfängen in engem Bezug steht zu den gesellschaftlich normierten Geschlechterrollen. Andererseits wurden in der Lehrerinnenausbildung unterschiedliche Wege beschritten, die Zeugnis ablegen für eine zunächst uneinheitliche Professionsgenese der Lehrerinnen. Dies hängt mit den mannigfachen Interessen der Akteure der Lehrerinnenbildung zusammen, welche den lehrenden Frauen im Auf- und Ausbau eines liberal ausgerichteten öffentlichen Bildungswesens unterschiedliche Aufgaben zuwiesen. Die Integration der Frauen in das öffentliche Bildungssystem als Lehrende im 19. Jahrhundert bewegte sich in diesem Spannungsfeld von Geschlechternormen und differenten bildungspolitischen Interessen. Erst gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts näherten sich diese unterschiedlichen Lehrerinnenausbildungsmodelle einander an.
