Grundlage dabei ist der Begriff vom Takt, der im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert theoretisch bestimmt wurde. Dem zeitgenossischen Verstandnis von Taktarten, Tempo und Taktgewicht wird in diesem Band in den Schriften der Theoretiker nachgespurt und ihre Aussagen werden anhand von Passagen aus Werken von Mozart, Beethoven und Schubert, aber auch von Theoretikern wie Johann Philip Kirnberger selbst uberpruft.
