Für Menschen mit einer Krebserkrankung ist die Frage nach der Hoffnung existenziell. Diese Arbeit schlägt eine Brücke zwischen den Erfahrungen von Krebspatienten und den heutigen Hoffnungskonzepten der Theologie, Philosophie, Psychologie und Medizin. Zunächst wird die Entwicklung des modernen Hoffnungsbegriffs an ausgewählten Beispielen untersucht. Danach folgen empirische Untersuchungen zu zwei Fragestellungen: Wie ist das Hoffnungsvermögen von Krebspatienten, Seelsorgern und Psychotherapeuten ausgeprägt und welche Persönlichkeitsmerkmale nehmen Einfluss auf die Hoffnung? Wie kommt Hoffnung zur Sprache und worauf bezieht sie sich? Abschließend werden aus Theorie und Empirie praktische Konsequenzen gezogen und Handlungsmöglichkeiten in Seelsorge und Psychotherapie für den Umgang mit Hoffnung aufgezeigt. Mit dieser Arbeit wurde die Autorin 2006 von der Evangelisch-Theologischen Fakultät der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg promoviert.
