Description
The biography of the Weimar publisher can in many ways be regarded as characteristic of a scientist and entrepreneur in the period of upheaval from the class to the bourgeois society. The pursuit of education and the integration into social networks made Froriep a well-known professor of medicine and a respected scientist of his time. He contributed to the founding of the University of Berlin and the development of a new scientific culture in Tübingen. As the son-in-law of the publisher Friedrich Justin Bertuch, he took over the management of the "Landes-Industrie-Comptoir", the largest Weimar business enterprise, and together with him published an early liberal daily newspaper. After 1819 Froriep was involved in the Weimar state parliament for reforms in line with early liberal ideas about society. In Weimar he mediated between the civil and the courtly world. As a spouse and father of a family, he dealt with partnership concepts, conveying values and gender roles.
