Im Unterschied zu den inzwischen zahlreich erschienenen Studien zu einzelnen Musikern und zum Musikleben dieser Zeit ist das Wirken der Reichsmusikkammer bisher noch nicht zusammenhängend erforscht worden. Um die Strukturen und Aufgaben sowie das Personal dieser Einrichtung besser verstehen zu können, hinterfragen die Autoren und Autorinnen dieses Bandes am Beispiel prominenter Protagonisten wie Richard Strauss, Paul Graener, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Paul Hindemith, Heinz Drewes, Werner Egk, Fritz Stein oder Peter Raabe die Spielräume und Grenzen von Kunst während des Dritten Reichs.
