Ersichtlich wird dabei nicht nur, dass E. T. A. Hoffmann keinesfalls der einzige Autor war, der sich um 1800 mit dem Selbstbezugs-, Gedächtnis- und Selbstausdrucksvermögen von Katzen auseinandersetzte. Vielmehr entfaltet die Studie anhand der Lektüre ausgewählter naturgeschichtlicher, tierseelenkundlicher und tierschutzbezogener Texte ein kulturhistorisches Panorama des langen 19. Jahrhunderts, das Aufschlüsse über die Ästhetik, Poetik und Kontextualität der Figur des autobiographischen Tieres zu geben vermag.
