Bei diesen Tendenzen, so Hedwig Richter, handelte es sich nicht einfach um Ungleichzeitigkeiten. Die vom Ideal der Gleichheit motivierte Inklusion der Massen hatte ihren Preis in einer Reihe von Exklusionen: Antisemitismus, Rassismus oder Misogynie. In ihrem Essay zeigt Richter, dass wir das 20. Jahrhundert mit seinen Extremen besser einordnen können, wenn wir die Reformzeit um 1900 in ihrer Komplexität begreifen.
