Description

Simonsohn, a jurist and social worker, was born in Bernburg (Saale) in 1912. Pp. 39-135 describe his family's experiences during the Holocaust. In 1934, Simonsohn finished his studies in law and social work, and began to work in Jewish welfare institutions. The Nazi anti-Jewish legislation and the boycott of Jewish businesses destroyed his father's firm, which led to his father's death. Simonsohn's brother, Carl, immigrated to Palestine in 1936. Simonsohn continued working for Jewish institutions, first in Stettin, and later in Hamburg, where he lived together with his mother and sister, Ilse. During the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in 1938, Simonsohn was detained in Sachsenhausen for a short period. In July 1942, the Simonsohns were deported to Theresienstadt, where Simonsohn met and became engaged to Trude Gutmann. In 1944 his mother died in Theresienstadt. He was deported to Auschwitz in October 1944, and from there to the Dachau sub-camp Kaufering III. After the liberation, he married Trude and they immigrated to Switzerland where he became the director of a Jewish hospital in Davos. His brother also settled in Switzerland. His sister left Theresienstadt with a transport of "prominent people" to Switzerland in January 1945. In 1950 Simonsohn and his wife moved to Hamburg.
