Das Rahmenthema «Religion und Kritik» der Jahrestagung der «Deutschen Vereinigung für Religionswissenschaft» im September 2005 in Bayreuth war Ausgangspunkt für die Fragestellung, welche Formen von Religionskritik im südostasiatischen Kontext festzustellen sind. Da die meisten Staaten in Südostasien entweder eine «Mehrheitsreligion» favorisieren oder wenigen Religionen einen von der Verfassung geregelten Platz zuweisen, entzündet sich Kritik in der Spannung zwischen Harmonisierungstendenzen und dem Festhalten an religionsinternem Pluralismus, indem (Lehr-)Interpretationen oder Praktiken kritisiert bzw. abgelehnt werden. Der Band vereinigt mitteleuropäische sowie südostasiatische Autorinnen und Autoren, die Formen von «Religionskritik» anhand der großen Religionen Buddhismus, Hinduismus, Islam und Christentum in deren jeweils unterschiedlichen Ausformungen in einzelnen Ländern Südostasiens aufzeigen. Dabei wird in vergleichender Perspektive sichtbar, dass Religionen jeweils abhängig von der konkreten lokalen Umgebung unterschiedliches Kritikpotenzial entfalten. Das Spektrum der Fragen zeigt Südostasien als eine vitale Region für religiösen Wandel der Gegenwart.
