Zuerst wird hierzu die historische Entwicklung des Konzeptes Homo Oeconomicus angerissen, um die nötigen Grundlagen für die dann folgende Diskussion zu schaffen. Dann werden Vor- und Nachteile des Konzepts beleuchtet und diskutiert. Im Mittelpunkt steht hierbei die Fragestellung „Ist die Vorstellung vom Menschen als ein ausschließlich an wirtschaftlichem Nutzen orientierten Subjekt hilfreich für die Wirtschaftswissenschaft?“ Argumentiert wird hierbei für die These „Das Konzept des Homo Oeconomicus ist ein defizitäres, aber dennoch sinnvolles Modell in der Wirtschaftswissenschaft.“
