Der Autor untersucht die direkte Wirkung von Negativkampagnen auf die Meinungsbildung der Wähler zudem mit Hilfe eines sozialwissenschaftlichen Experiments. Obwohl zugespitzte Auseinandersetzungen mit dem politischen Gegner zur Realität der deutschen Wahlkampfführung gehören, weisen die politisch Handelnden „Negative Campaigning“ weit von sich. Denn hierzulande werden darunter verbale Schlammschlachten und Schmutzkampagnen verstanden, die nicht dem politischen Ethos der Bundesrepublik entsprechen.
