Angesichts der politischen Bedeutung der neuen sozialen Bewegungen ist auch die sozialwissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit ihnen mittlerweile zu einem festen Bestandteil des Fachs geworden. So hat sich selbst die Systemtheorie im Zusammenhang mit der Analyse der modernen Gesellschaft und den Folgeproblemen funktionaler Differenzierung diesem Thema zugewandt. Angeregt durch Arbeiten Niklas Luhmanns speziell zu den neuen sozialen Bewegungen sind mehrere systemtheoretische Konzeptualisierungsvorschläge vorgelegt worden, die in ihrer Summe aber eher unsystematisch erscheinen und mit wechselnden Problemstellungen operieren.Diese Studie versucht, die systemtheoretischen Beiträge unter den Gesichtspunkten des Gesellschaftsbezugs, der Funktionsbestimmung und des Systemstatus sozialer Bewegungen zu systematisieren. Während die bisherigen Arbeiten jedoch vorrangig den Gesellschaftsbezug und damit das Außenverhältnis sozialer Bewegungen in den Blick nehmen,unterstreicht diese Arbeit die Identitätsproblematik der an den Bewegungen Beteiligten und damit das Innenverhältnis neuer sozialer Bewegungen. Denn nur durch die gleichwertige Berücksichtigung beider Sichtweisen kann die Mobilisierung sozialer Bewegungen hinreichend erklärt werden.
