Das Buch ist eine dokumentarische Sammlung von Lebensgeschichten in der Tradition der "Oral History" bzw. des ethnographischen narrativen Interviews. Im Zentrum steht das "Gespräch mit Betroffenen" anstelle der politischen Diskussion über das Thema. Mit der Rückübersetzung ins Englische/Französische erhalten die Erzählenden ein Stück Identität. Das Werk vermittelt Anstösse zur Frage, wieweit die biografischen Geschichten der Betroffenen plausibel und nachprüfbar sind. Thematisiert werden indirekt die kulturell unterschiedlichen Wahrheitsbegriffe in den Herkunftsländern derjenigen, die in Europa Schutz und Perspektive suchen. "Und es sind Menschen auf der Flucht" zeigt auf: Die Lebenskonzepte in Mitteleuropa entsprechen in vielem nicht denjenigen in den Fluchtländern. Und sie sind nicht die einzig möglichen. Die Erzählenden stammen vorwiegend aus Schwarzafrika. Jede Geschichte ist mit einem kritischen Anhang und einem Kontext zur politischen und gesellschaftlichen Situation im Heimatland des Erzählers oder der Erzählerin versehen. Zielgruppe Menschen, die Asylanten begegnen und diese besser verstehen möchten, politisch Interessierte und sozial Engagierte in Gemeinden und Seelsorge, Migrationsfachleute und politische Entscheidungsträger in ganz Europa.
