Kommissar Wengler und sein Assistent Armin Staller haben sich mit einem Mord zu beschäftigen den Amalia Pohl von ihrem Balkon aus im Nachbarhaus gesehen haben will. Es stellt sich heraus, dass alles was sie im Fenster gegenüber beobachtete stimmt und dort um die Mittagszeit ein Mann erschossen wurde. Die erste Spur führt auf den Bekanntenkreis des Toten, der wenig Aufschluss über das Warum geben kann oder will. Als nächstes untersucht man die Vergangenheit des Opfers, die allerdings immer mehr Rätsel aufzuwerfen scheint als Lösungen. Schließlich kommen die Fäden nun doch zusammen und alle Geschichten, wie das bisherige Leben des Toten und sein Umfeld, die Personen mit denen er bis vor seinem Tod zu tun hatte, die letzten Monate seines Lebens und die daraus resultierenden Verbindungen ergeben letztendlich die Lösung dieses nicht einfachen Falles, der auch Kommissar Wengler in noch nicht von ihm betretene Sphären Einblicke gewährt.
