El presente estudio se enmarca dentro de una trayectoria que parte en la especialización académica de la Filología Alemana (dentro de ella, de la Teoría de la Literatura) e incorpora la apertura que lleva la asunción de los presupuestos de la Teoría de la Cultura. Su intención por tanto es, tras una confrontación metodológica con la Teoría de la Cultura, la reinterpretación del Imperio austrohúngaro (1867-1918) a la búsqueda de una mejor comprensión de Europa. Para ello se asume una abstracción conceptual del Imperio austrohúngaro en el contexto cultural llamado "Austriahungría", el cual sirve como hipótesis teórico-cultural del Imperio austrohúngaro, de su sentido y de su trascendencia cultural. El testimonio esencial lo constituyen las obras literarias en lengua alemana de los sujetos austrohúngaros herederos de la diversidad, cuyo realce no solo supone el descubrimiento de una literatura relegada a un segundo plano, sino que permite además una relectura intencionada de su impacto. En ellas podemos encontrar las claves para una exitosa construcción del proyecto europeo actual.
