Der Göttinger Reformationshistoriker Thomas Kaufmann sichtet die frühreformatorische Druckgraphik Lukas Cranachs d. Ä. unter dem Gesichtspunkt seiner Zusammenarbeit mit Luther und dem Wittenberger Kreis. Dabei kommt er zu einigen neuen Deutungen bestimmter serieller Werke wie dem "Passional Christi und Antichristi" und den Illustrationen zur ersten Ausgabe des Neuen Testements in der Übersetzung Luthers (sog. Septembertestament). In Bezug auf den bekannten Holzschnitt des bärtigen Luther ("Junker Jörg") bricht Kaufmann mit den bisherigen Datierungen auf 1521/2 und zeigt, dass es sich einerseits um ein Dokument des kämpferischen Antipapalismus aus dem Jahr 1537 handelt, andererseits um ein Monument der Memoria.
