Sie beginnt sich zu erinnern: an die Kindheit in Budapest in den 1930er-Jahren, an den Vater, einen praktizierenden Psychoanalytiker, der die Affären ihrer Mutter als Symptom abhakt und der kleinen Sophie schon im Kindesalter erklärt, sie würde am Elektrakomplex leiden. 1939 emigriert die jüdische Familie in die USA, doch auch nach drei Jahrzehnten fühlt sich Sophie, als sei sie nie vom Schiff gestiegen. Einer steilen akademischen Karriere folgte die Ehe mit dem Intellektuellen Ezra, für den sie erst dann die "beste Frau der Welt" ist, wenn er sie endlich zum Schweigen gebracht hat. Haltlose Gewalt und Erniedrigung konterkarieren das nach außen perfekte Leben. Je tiefer sie ihre Vergangenheit reflektiert, desto unwirklicher erscheint ihr die Gegenwart.
