Description

Travel by means of public transport is experiencing a renaissance. It should and must regain public esteem. Success in this venture can only be achieved if airports, railway stations and terminals offer a high-quality ambience, if they once again become valuable to society and are transformed into attractive locations of arrival and departure. Von Gerkan, Marg and Partner have made an exceptional contribution to the development of transportation buildings: their work is indeed exemplary as to concepts and new solutions. This book presents for the first time the most important transportation buildings and projects designed by gmp between 1964 and 1996, many of them built. It also documents the visionary quality of their airport designs for Berlin, Algiers, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Moscow, Pyongyang and Zurich, which were as future-oriented as their more recent concepts for railway stations for Berlin, Stuttgart, Munich, Frankfurt or Potsdam. Individual elements for the revitalization of existing railway stations are presented parallel to integral development projects; the ideas and designs are on a supremely aesthetic level throughout. Attention to detail has gone as far as leading to a new color and natural textiles concept for the interior design of railway carriage interiors.
