Die vorliegende Publikation will William Morris' umfassendes kunsttheoretisches Werk und seine Arbeiten im Bereich der angewandten Künste exemplarisch und erklärend zusammenzuführen sowie in Hinblick auf gemeinsame zugrunde liegende Motivationen und Anliegen betrachten. In seinen Aufsätzen und Vorträgen formulierte Intentionen, der Charakter und die Aussage der künstlerischen Werke werden einander gegenübergestellt; dabei wird zugleich überprüft, inwieweit Morris den eigenen Vorgaben folgt. Das Nebeneinanderstellen von Äusserung und Werk soll zugleich die Untrennbarkeit der beiden Bereiche für Morris darlegen. Als Leitmotive in der Auswahl der Texte wurden das Mittelalter, die Einheit der freien und angewandten Künste, Handwerk und industrielle Fertigung, die Rolle des Arbeiters sowie das Verhältnis zur Natur gewählt. Morris' Anliegen war die Gestaltung 'moderner', der eigenen Zeit und ihren Bedürfnissen entsprechenden Gegenstände.
