The major topic of this book is the communicative unit of the text, both within and between cultures. The concept of text is analyzed from a number of different perspectives; for example from a linguistic perspective, from the point of view of literary studies and from the field of the social sciences. In addition to posing theoretical questions on genres and translation studies, the authors examine a variety of texts, such as instruction manuals, study programmes, contemporary literature as well as focusing on communicative structures in science, educational systems, health care and business. The articles in this anthology were inspired by a workshop on the interdisciplinary study of the concept of text arranged at A stfold University College in Halden, Norway in 2009. The authors are researchers at universities and university colleges in Austria, Denmark, Greece, Norway and Sweden.
