Doch Esteban ist auch mit siebzig noch ein vitaler Mann. Und er ist Realist. Eine Perspektive für die Zukunft sieht er nicht und zieht die Konsequenzen. Rafael Chirbes erzählt einen Wirtschaftskrimi und eine Familiengeschichte. Und er schreibt die Mentalitätsgeschichte Spaniens fort. Sarkastisch, mit viel Humor und Witz zeigt er uns die gesellschaftlichen Verwerfungen, den Tanz um das goldene Kalb, der immer weiter geht.
