Rubéns Kindheitsfreund, Federico Brouard, ist als Schriftsteller gescheitert und verbringt seine letzten Tage im Suff, Ramon Collado ist Rubéns Mann fürs Grobe. Aus diesen unterschiedlichen Perspektiven entsteht ein grandioses Gesellschaftspanorama: die Familie als Ort des Besitzdenkens, die Zerstörung der Umwelt, Bauspekulation, schmutzige Geschäfte, Korruption, Drogen. Sexualität als Ware und gleichzeitig letzter Halt gegen die Auflösung jeglicher Verbindungen. Rafael Chirbes erzählt in »Krematorium« eine aus den Fugen geratene, von den Göttern verlassene Welt, in der keine Gewissheit mehr gilt, in der Werte, Wörter und Utopien leere Hülsen sind. Und doch ist dieser Roman ein Rettungsversuch: Aus der Erzählung der Widersprüche einer Ge?sell?schaft, die sich ganz dem Konsum und dem Mammon verschrieben hat, wird schmerzhaft deutlich, was wir verloren haben.
