Eugenio Gerardo Lobo fue seguramente el poeta más leído, o cuanto menos el más editado, en la mitad oscura del Siglo de las Luces. Entre 1717 y 1738 visitaron las prensas siete distintas ediciones de sus obras escogidas, sin contar pliegos de menor extensión. Sucede, sin embargo, que ni siquiera las antologías modernas más divulgadas dan idea exacta de la producción y estilo de Eugenio Gerardo Lobo, y ello se debe a la existencia de problemas editoriales. Ocho años después de la muerte de don Eugenio se publican, en la célebre imprenta de Joaquín Ibarra, dos volúmenes con, según reza el título del segundo tomo, Varias poesías, y entre ellas muchas del excelentísimo señor don Eugenio Gerardo Lobo. A pesar de este título, diáfano y no demasiado sujeto a interpretación, por motivos que desconozco se ha dado por hecho secularmente que todas las composiciones de la edición de Joaquín Ibarra se deben, efectivamente, a Lobo y no a otro autor alguno. En las antologías modernas de mayor circulación se atribuyen a Lobo composiciones que no aparecen en ninguna de las ediciones publicadas en vida del autor, sino solo en el segundo volumen de la póstuma de Ibarra. A mi modo de ver, esta práctica distorsiona el legado de don Eugenio. La piedra de toque de Lobo es la edición revisada de 1738, y más allá de sus márgenes se extienden las tinieblas de la atribución. De ella, en consecuencia, proceden las veinte composiciones que conforman esta selección.
