В отличие от предыдущих томов иллюстрированных определителей в настоящем томе все группы животных, за исключением актиний, мягких и мадрепоровых кораллов, содержат виды всего Арктического океана, а не только евразийских морей Арктики. Всего книга включает 348 видов и подвидов из всех морей и сопредельных глубоководных частей Арктики. Для каждого вида представлены краткие сведения о синонимии, распространению в Арктике и по всему ареалу, а также экологии. В конце тома приводятся типы ареалов видов, населяющих Северный Ледовитый океан, с картами. Книга предназначена для морских биологов, зоологов, экологов, преподавателей и студентов.
