Ütopyalar ve karşı-ütopyalar en geniş anlamda bir roman türü olarak kabul edilmekle beraber, felsefi düşünme geleneğinin en canlı biçimde izlenebileceği özel metinler olarak görülmelidirler. Zira bir felsefe sözlüğünde, diğer edebi türlere ait başlık bulunmazken “ütopya” ve “ütopyacılık” maddelerinin varolması dahi, edebiyat-felsefe ilişkisinin ütopyalar üzerinden, başka edebi türlere nazaran çok daha sağlam kurulabileceğinin bir göstergesi olarak kabul edilebilir. Kaldı ki kimi ütopya örnekleri de edebiyatçılar tarafından değil, fakat düşünce tarihinin önemli filozoflarınca kaleme alınmıştır. Ayrıca modern kabullerin, metotların ve projelerin tümünün on altıncı yüzyılla beraber kendisini gösterdiği ve yirminci yüzyılla birlikte ise alenen eleştirildiği edebi metinler olması, ütopyaları ve karşı-ütopyaları felsefe tarihi açısından ayrıcalıklı konuma yükselten bir diğer faktör olarak karşımıza çıkar. Böylece ütopyalar ve karşı-ütopyalar yaşadığımız modern dünyanın mahiyetini anlama çabasının en rahat sürdürülebileceği mecralardan ikisi olurlar.
