A lo largo de cinco capítulos, Branko Milanovic expone el futuro posible de la desigualdad mundial. En el primer capítulo se explica cómo la desigualdad mundial ha cambiado a partir de la Revolución Industrial y de la caída del Muro de Berlín. Asimismo, se realiza un recuento histórico del surgimiento de la clase media y su antagonismo con los súper ricos. En el segundo apartado, se analizan algunos factores de la desigualdad nacional y se reformula la teoría de los ciclos de Kuznets, para el autor la desigualdad tiende primero a incrementarse y luego a reducirse. En la tercera sección se contrasta la desigualdad global a través del tiempo y entre diferentes países. Por su parte, los últimos dos apartados constituyen la proyección de un posible escenario a futuro de la desigualdad y de posibles alternativas a este problema.
