Concebida como el conjunto de leyendas tradicionales en que la imaginación primitiva recogió sus nociones, sueños y experiencias respecto al universo, la mitología se manifiesta en forma de cuentos o mitos comunicados de boca en boca, objetos de creencia en principio, y siempre testimonio precioso sobre cierta etapa o cierta fase de la mente. En esta obra, Alfonso Reyes examina los mitos griegos que todavía iluminan nuestra civilización, y muestra cómo el mundo natural se confunde con el mundo sobrenatural: la gran Familia Olímpica participaba en el destino humano y luchaba entre sí para imponer sus designios en los acontecimientos. Pero también cómo, a pesar del politeísmo y del antropomorfismo que distinguen a esa mitología, y más allá de la multitud de personajes divinos, se vislumbraba la existencia de una deidad superior de índole puramente espiritual. En su afán de universalización, los filósofos de Grecia, afirma Reyes, “alcanzaron la noción del Dios único, trascendente y perfecto.”
