Los trabajos reunidos en este libro son versiones más extensas de las exposiciones leídas en el homenaje a Juan José Arreola organizado por El Colegio de México con motivo del gozoso centenario de su nacimiento. Sobre este escritor mexicano, Jorge Luis Borges dijo: “Nació en México en 1918. Pudo haber nacido en cualquier lugar y en cualquier siglo”. Al aludir la ubicuidad de Arreola, Borges implicaba lo que algunos definirían como la universalidad de su literatura. Con ese tono entre irónico y juguetón tan suyo, Arreola describía así su amor por la literatura: “Mis influencias, hasta las más profundas, como pueden ser las de Rilke, Kafka y Proust, las he vivido no sólo como mexicano sino como payo. Hasta mis mayores refinamientos están vividos con alma y cuerpo de pueblerino mexicano”. En este volumen se aprecia la versatilidad de sus textos, donde conviven la cultura letrada y la popular, que son las fuentes escritas u orales en las que él abrevó sin prejuicio alguno.
